What are dentures?
Dentures are a prosthesis for patients with missing teeth. They are made of various materials, such as metal, acrylics, or plastics. They can be fixed or removable. Fixed dentures are normally anchored by dental implants. Dentures of any kind are considered a form of full mouth rehabilitation.
What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?
Dentures today are much more varied than in the past. Conventional dentures are fabricated for patients when teeth are already missing. They take several visits to be made for the individual patient. On the other hand, immediate dentures are placed at the time of surgical removal of remaining teeth, so the patient does not go without teeth during the healing process. Keep in mind, the immediate denture is generally not the final denture because it will no longer fit properly once the tissues heal. However, it is always a good idea to have a back-up set of dentures, so we always recommend two dentures.
Who should consider cosmetic dentures?
Chicago Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Ivan believes everyone who uses dentures is a candidate for cosmetic dentures. Conventional dentures may look lifeless, opaque, and unnatural. One of the problems often found with conventional dentures is that they do not support the lips and face well, leaving patients with what our dentist often calls the “Robin Williams ” effect, where the nose and chin are too close together. The lower chin protrudes, the upper lip is flat, and the teeth cannot be seen even when smiling. Cosmetic dentures address and correct all of these facial support issues, leading to a more aesthetic appearance overall.
